The
cruise ship Costa Concordia sank on 13th January 2012 next to the
shores of Giglio Island in Italy. The cruise ship, which is one
of the largest vessel built ever, got a large hole after collision
with reef when leaving the Savona port. The ship quickly became
to fill with water and got over 80 degrees heel. The collision happened when the passengers were
having a dinner and most of them were not aware what is happening
with the vessel. Only the crew was aware for the situation in the
first minutes of collision and the master Franco Schettino got decision
to turn the vessel closer to the shore. Only these actions of the
crew and master saved the lives of the passengers and crew members.
Soon after the collision was immediately declared an emergency and
people on cruise ship has been ordered to gather in lifeboats.
According to some witnesses on board quickly
got a panic. Some of the many older travelers began to cry, others
jumped into the water and swam to Giglio Island. The shores of closest
Italian island were about 400 meters from the sinking ship Costa
Concordia. According to the captain of the cruise ship, the accident
happened because the vessel hit reefs, which were not marked on
the navigation chart. According
to his words the hole in the hull of the giant ship reaches 70 m
and after he was aware that the vessel is sinking, he started maneuvers
to turn the vessel closer to the shore. On board of Costa Concordia
were 3200 passengers and about 1000 crew members. In the first hours
of the accident the authorities reported that the save and rescue
operations were successful, but unfortunately over 40 people were
missing, over 70 people were seriously injured and even was reported
for 5 victims. The authorities, did not reported the list of missing
and injured passengers, but
it was known that the missing people are from Italian, American,
German and French nationalities. However, the people on board of
Costa Concordia on the tragic cruise were from 60 nationalities.
The disaster with Costa Concordia was really terrible
and we are all sending our regrets to the people, who were on board
of the large cruise liner. The story of Costa Concordia finishes
on 13th January 2012, but we will all remember this large cruise
ship, which was one of the most luxury and most impressive vessel,
which were built ever. |
